Planning for the Future

Planning for school facilities is an ongoing responsibility of the Person County Board of Education. As part of this work, the district regularly evaluates the condition, capacity, and long-term needs of its schools through comprehensive facility assessments, enrollment projections, and strategic planning.

Approximately every four years, the Board of Education conducts a comprehensive review of the district's facilities as part of the PCS 2030 Facilities Plan and the district's Strategic Plan. This process includes evaluating school capacity, enrollment trends, building conditions, infrastructure needs, educational programming, and long-term priorities to help ensure school facilities continue to meet the needs of students and the community.

The most recent facilities assessment identified several significant challenges, including projected enrollment growth, elementary capacity constraints, aging building systems, and critical infrastructure needs. The assessment found that several elementary schools are already experiencing capacity challenges, and it projects that Person County Schools could serve approximately 1,045 additional students over the next decade. The district has already taken steps to maximize the use of existing facilities, including adjusting attendance boundaries to better balance enrollment across schools.

As part of the planning process, the Board of Education evaluated multiple options for addressing these identified needs. The options included renovating an existing middle school as a short-term solution and a long-term facilities plan that would construct a new middle school while renovating the current Northern Middle School and Southern Middle School buildings for use as elementary schools. After reviewing the facilities assessment, enrollment projections, long-range planning goals, and future capacity needs, the Board selected the long-term facilities plan as the basis for its capital funding request to Person County.

The Person County Board of Commissioners subsequently approved placing a $107 million General Obligation School Bond before voters to finance the proposed project, subject to voter approval.

On November 3, 2026, Person County voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to authorize the proposed bond. Early voting will be available prior to Election Day.
