Piedmont Electric Cooperative has awarded 12 PCS educators Bright Ideas Grants totaling $15,981.00. These grants will fund engaging classroom projects for students. Representatives from Piedmont Electric Cooperative visited South Elementary School this morning to deliver news of winning to three educators. Pictured are Hiedi Gustin, Elizabeth Sinnott, and Kristin Hernandez. Other district awardees are Kelly Pearce (Southern Middle School), Lauren Pool and Katy Watson (Stories Creek Elementary School), Pamela Parham (PCS Virtual Academy), Kristen Clayton and Melisa Poindexter (Oak Lane Elementary School), Heather Clarke (North Elementary School), and Dory Newkirk adn Melissa White (Helena Elementary School). Congratulations to all of our Bright Ideas Grant Recipients and a huge thank you to Piedmont Electric Cooperative for your ongoing suport of the work we do for children in Person County Schools!

Good evening Panthers, Just one week before students return to school. This Thursday we will host our annual open house. We are offering two sessions to accommodate work schedules of parents. The first session will run from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm and the second session will run from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. This will be a great opportunity to meet your teachers, complete online registration and of course receive your child’s schedule. Schedules will also be made available through Powerschool on Thursday. We are excited to announce that we will have a boys’ soccer team this fall. The soccer summer workout camp will begin this week Monday-Friday from 4:00 pm- 6:00 pm. It will be important that all players get an up to date physical before tryouts which will begin August 28th. Cheerleading workouts begin this week August 21st-August 23rd from 3-5 in the SMS dance room. Cheerleading tryouts will be August 29th-September 1st from 3:30-6:00. Our Booster Club is looking for more parents to get involved as they work to support all of our Panther student athletes. Good evening Panthers, We are excited to announce that we have secured a soccer coach and will have a team this season. Summer soccer workouts will begin this Monday at 4:00 PM and will end at 6:00 PM. Students interested in playing soccer should meet at the gym. It will be important that all players have an up to date physical before tryouts on August 28th. Physical forms can be picked up at the main office. If your child has an up to date physical you may turn in a copy at the main office. We look forward to seeing our Panthers compete on the soccer field this season.

Good evening Panthers, I hope you are enjoying the last days of summer and making the most of your time before students return to school. This is a reminder that this Friday, August 18th is our summer 6th Grade Orientation from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm. This event is for students only. Students will enter through the gym entrance near the football field. At the end of the event, students will be picked up at the car rider line at the back of the school near the baseball field. This event will provide a great opportunity for 6th grade students to meet their teachers and get familiar with the school before school begins. If you have not already completed the RSVP for this event please do so using the link provided on our school Facebook page and in the email version of this message. On August 24th we will host our annual Open House for students and parents. There will be two sessions for Open House to provide multiple opportunities for parents to attend. The first session will run from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm and the second session will run from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Students will receive their schedules and be able to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. If your child is interested in trying out for cheerleading, there has been a change in the date for tryouts. Tryouts will now be from August 29th - September 1st. Hey Panthers! We are excited to welcome Mrs. Patricia Castro to our Southern Middle School team from Columbia . Mrs. Castro will be teaching Spanish classes at SMS during the first semester and at NMS during the second semester. This is a return trip for Mrs. Castro as she has previously taught in North Carolina in the past. Below is a message from our new Panther- My name is S. Patricia Castro and I will have the privilege of being the new Spanish teacher at Southern Middle. I know we are going to have a terrific school year full of challenges and meaningful learning experiences. I have been a teacher for over 18 years. I hold a bachelor’s in Modern Languages and a master’s degree in TESOL from Greensboro College, NC. I have previously worked as a teacher and elementary coordinator at an international bilingual school in my hometown; also, as an ESL, ELA, and Dual Language teacher for Chatham County Schools -NC. Additionally, I have experience as an instructor and teacher administrator in colleges. I am originally from Bogotá, Colombia. I am married to an architect and I am the lucky mother of a nine-year-old ballerina. I also have two cats: Magoo is 16 and Milo is 3. Ms. Bocanegra will be teaching the 6th grade dual language class. She has been teaching at South Elementary for the past two years and will follow her students up the road. She previously taught in Johnston County during her first experience teaching in North Carolina. Below is a message from Ms. Bocanegra- Hello, Panthers! I am Ms. Katia Bocanegra and I am excited to become a part of the Southern Middle School team. I am from Peru, a beautiful and welcoming country in South America, so get ready to learn a lot about my country and its rich ancient culture. I have 15 years of teaching experience and I hold a licensure of Education and a master degree in Applied Linguistics, but most important is that I am a teacher at heart and I truly enjoy teaching children.
