The Person County Board of Education is seeking feedback regarding the 2024-2025 school calendar. PCS staff is presenting three options for the 2024-2025 calendar—one with an early start date and two with the traditional start date.

Due to the possibility of patchy ice on the roads and extremely cold temperatures/wind chills for bus riders, PCS will operate on a 2-hour delay for staff and students tomorrow, 01/17. Breakfast will not be served and daycares will open at 8 am. Please be careful and stay safe.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr Day! No School on January 15th


Due to power outages and trees down in spots across the county, Person County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay for students on Wednesday 01/10. This will allow time for power restoration, debris to be cleaned up, and buses to run during daylight hours. Please travel safe.

Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day!

Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, January 10th. Please review the report card and return any cover sheets that require a signature. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.
Southern Middle School will host its Quarter 2 Awards Ceremonies on Friday, January 12th. Please join us in celebrating students who have been selected as Superstars and those who have met the requirements for Honor Roll!

Many students have enrolled in new classes for the second semester. Therefore, it is time to update your enrollments in our teachers’ Remind classes. Please see the link in this week’s newsletter to sign up and establish those quick, convenient communication pathways! Remember, teachers use Remind to send important information about class including field trips and upcoming assessments.
This week in sports our Panther wrestlers will compete at home on Wednesday against Orange starting at 4:30pm. Then, on Thursday, our boys basketball players will travel away while our girls team remains at home. Both teams will compete against Smith and both games will begin at 5:00pm. On Friday, our Panther wrestlers will compete at home against Phillips starting at 5:00pm.
Finally, please mark your calendars. January 15th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There is no school for staff or students. Please make childcare arrangements as necessary.

This is Southern Middle School contacting you with your weekly updates and announcements. This week marks the last week of the second quarter. Please work with your child and ensure that all necessary assignments are submitted. Questions and concerns can be directed to your child's teacher.
Join us Monday, December 11th at 6:30pm for our Winter Band Concert! Come witness the hard work and dedication of Southern Middle School’s band students as they serenade the crowd, all under the leadership and guidance of Southern Middle School’s band and general music teacher, Mr. Ricardo James. This event is free and open to the public!
Those participating in Battle of the Books will meet tomorrow morning from arrival to 8:00am and tomorrow after school until 4:30pm. Please pick up your child at the front of the school Monday afternoon.
December 13th from 5pm-9pm is Southern Middle School’s Torero’s Night! This Wednesday, consider dining in or placing a take-out order at Roxboro’s own Torero's Mexican Restaurant! Not only will you get a quick, tasty meal, Torero’s will donate a portion of the evening’s profits to Southern Middle School.
Parents of sixth grade students are reminded that the sixth grade field trip to the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex is scheduled for this Thursday. Permission slips and payments are past due! Behavior expectations must be met to participate. All missing assignments are due by December 13th. Students should email their teacher the name of the assignment completed so grades can be appropriately updated.
As you enjoy the upcoming holiday, possibly spending time decluttering and cleaning out dressers, please know that donations are needed for our Comfy Closet. Needed items include boys and girls sweatpants, t-shirts, and jackets. Toiletries and feminine hygiene products are also greatly appreciated.
This week in sports Strawbridge Studios will be at Southern Middle School after school on Monday, December 11th to photograph winter athletes. Picture packages and specialty options can be viewed by accessing the link in this week’s newsletter.
On Tuesday, our boys basketball team will travel away while our girls basketball team takes homecourt advantage. Both games are against Orange and both games are scheduled to begin at 5:00pm.
On Wednesday, our Panther Wrestlers will travel away to Smith to face off in a wrestling match scheduled to start at 4:30pm.
On Thursday our boys basketball team will travel, yet again, while our girls basketball team plays at home. Both games are against Stanback, and both games are scheduled to start at 5:00pm.
Remember, home games are only $5 at the gate. Small bills preferred. Come on out and support our Panther players!
Finally, join us as we celebrate the last week of school before the holiday break with Southern Middle School’s Christmas Spirit Week. Monday is Christmas Colors Day. Wear red, green, and white. Tuesday is Christmas PJ Day. Wednesday is Holiday Character Day. Thursday is Holiday Socks Day. Friday is Ugly Sweater Day. Join us in celebrating the upcoming holidays by participating in our Christmas Spirit Week!
