On Wednesday, October 6th, Shirlrona Johnson, principal of Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership, was named the Principal of the Year for Person County Schools. Mrs. Johnson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology both from North Carolina Central University.  She worked in the private sector for several years before becoming a Career and Technical Education Teacher.  She also served as an administrative intern and teacher leader facilitator before becoming the principal of the then new Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership for the 2016-2017 school year.  She has served in that role since and the inaugural class graduated in May of 2021.

Mrs. Johnson shared,  “When asked how I felt about being recognized as Person County Schools’  Principal of the Year, I can honestly say the first word that came to mind was "speechless" and the next was "humbled".  I am truly humbled to have been recognized in such a fashion by my colleagues and our school district leaders.  I have so much respect for the work that we all do to make our schools a safe and positive place for our students to learn, grow, and flourish daily.  This is a challenging profession, but rewarding when students grasp new concepts or skills, reach milestones in their academic journeys, grow in confidence, or reach the finish line and graduate.  So when in the company of so many great school leaders, I feel truly humbled to have been so recognized.”

Judy Bradsher, Executive Director of CTE, CCP, & Early College, commented, “Mrs. Shirlrona Johnson is an amazing principal and professional who has over the past 5 years created a school culture that demonstrates integrity and compassion.  In her leadership, she continually builds engaging and meaningful relationships to support her students, staff, parents and the community. She is definitely an exemplary and innovative principal who serves as a model for others in leadership.”

Dr. Rodney Peterson, Superintendent, states, “Person County Schools is proud to name Shirlrona Johnson as the Principal of the Year. Her dedication and commitment are evident through her innovative leadership, expectations of excellence, and the genuine relationships she builds with each and every student. The positive energy and climate that is immediately felt upon entering the building is due to her unwavering desire and passion for her students to be the best of the best.  The staff, students, parents, and community members of both Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership and Person County Schools are lucky to have Mrs. Johnson as a leader and advocate for students.”
