Person High School Names New Head Varsity Football Coach Carl Smith, Jr.

Coach Carl SmithPerson County Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Carl Smith, Jr. as the new head varsity football coach at Person High School.  Coach Smith comes to PHS from Beddingfield High School in Wilson, North Carolina where he has served as both a teacher and the head football coach since 2019.

During his tenure at Beddingfield High School, Coach Smith led the team to an overall record of 13-7. In 2019, he led the team to their first county championship in 10 years and was only the 3rd coach in school history to accomplish this feat.  In addition, during Smith’s seasons as head coach,  the team averaged 44 points per game and holds the school record with the most points scored in a single game (78).

Since 2019, Coach Smith has served as a health and physical education teacher.  In this role, he developed a strength and conditioning program for the football program and also for all other athletes.  His philosophy focuses on the values of work ethic, teamwork, discipline, integrity, honesty, and honor; all of which will be beneficial in both the classroom and on the football field.

Coach Smith holds a bachelor’s degree from Campbell University.  While in college, he was a running back on the football team.  Coach Smith is married to his wife, Kiara, and they have two children, Carl III, age 5 months, and Laila, age 8.  

Coach Smith commented, “I am extremely blessed and grateful for the opportunity to lead the Person Rockets. I look forward to the challenge of growing not only a successful program, but also successful young men!”

“Coach Smith will bring a high level of energy, needed stability, and help raise the level of expectations for our student athletes.  We are excited about his arrival.” stated Jeremy Clayton, PHS Athletic Director.
