Presented by the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex; Person County Arts Council; Person County Recreation, Arts and Parks Department; and Piedmont Community College.

no-cost, social-emotional learning-based digital project for local youth focused on fostering relationships during COVID-19, keeping connections strong despite necessary mitigation measures, cultivating kindness and resiliency, and a sense of support in our community.

National Social-Emotional Learning Day is March 26, 2021. Let's support our youth in building these important skills!

 ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

"Person Connections" is a brand new program provided to our community as part of the Person County Arts Council's Arts in Education initiative.

This project focuses on fostering relationships, keeping connections strong despite necessary mitigation measures, cultivating kindness and resiliency, and a sense of support in our community.

Staff from the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex are recording video interviews with community leaders and essential workers about their experiences during the pandemic and advice or stories to help our youth through this challenging time, too.

These videos are available on the Kirby's YouTube channel now: Kirby Cultural Arts Complex - YouTube, with more interviews to be added in the coming months.

(Interview subjects include Superintendent Dr. Rodney Peterson, staff from the Person County Health Department, Roxboro Fire Department staff, grocery store employees, Piedmont Community College leaders, and many others who have worked so hard to support the safety and well-being of our community.)

WAYS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN "PERSON CONNECTIONS":

These videos and virtual conversations are designed to provide educators, community groups, and families’ maximum flexibility for student participation.

Sample assignments and activities include:

  • Letter and postcard writing
    • Included in this packet are artist-designed postcards that allow students to reply with questions and messages of gratitude to the community leaders featured in the videos. Contact us when these cards (or your own letters) are ready and we will pick them up and distribute to video participants. The card also may be featured on social media or other community news outlets (no last names for students, please!)
  • Essays & Creative Writing
    • Students may choose to write a response to one of the same questions presented to our community workers, including:  Do you ever feel sad or scared, and what do you do about it? When you are drained mentally, how do you recharge yourself? What's the first thing you want to do when "this" is all over?
