Martin Named Person County Schools Principal of the Year

On Wednesday, October 7th, Dustin Martin, principal of Stories Creek Elementary School, was named the Principal of the Year for Person County Schools. Mr. Martin holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree in School Administration from North Carolina State University.  He taught in Caldwell County Schools for two years and began working in Person County Schools in 2009. He served as a teacher at North End Elementary School from 2009-2014 and completed his administrative internship at Stories Creek Elementary School and Helena Elementary School during the 2014-2015 school year. He then served as the assistant principal at Helena Elementary School and Southern Middle School before being named as the principal of Stories Creek Elementary at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

Mr. Martin shared, “As a Person County native and former student in Person County Schools, it is a huge honor to represent PCS as the Principal of the Year.  I know that the successes I have experienced are a direct result of the people who have supported me through every transition of my career.  To the wonderful staff at Stories Creek and to my family, I owe a great deal of gratitude for all the hard work and sacrifices you make to always do what is best for kids in Person County.  To me, this award is a tribute to them, because without them I could not be truly successful as their leader.”

Amy Seate, Chief Academic Officer, states, “Mr. Martin is one of the most introspective leaders I know.  Before Mr. Martin makes decisions for Stories Creek's students, he first looks at the schoolwide systems in place that do, or do not, have a positive impact on student achievement.  He seeks the expertise of mentors around him, including veteran staff members and leaders in the district.  He is not afraid to try new things and relies on evidence-based practices to make solution-oriented decisions for the students at Stories Creek.  Every time Mr. Martin talks through school improvement with me, he already has the solutions in mind. Solutions he has vetted with his staff and his mentors.  It is refreshing to work with such a solution-oriented leader who is not afraid to move fast and break down barriers. Mr. Martin leads with passion, determination, and courage to make change!  Our district is blessed to have him leading Stories Creek Elementary.”

Dr. Rodney Peterson, Superintendent, states, “Person County Schools is proud to name Dustin Martin as the Principal of the Year. His dedication and commitment to the students and staff at Stories Creek Elementary is incomparable.  Mr. Martin challenges his staff to ensure that each and every student receives instruction aligned to individual need, ability, and potential.  In turn, he encourages all students to strive to reach above and beyond what they thought was possible.  This dedication has led to continued student growth and increases in achievement scores. The staff, students, parents, and community members of both Stories Creek Elementary School and Person County Schools are lucky to have Mr. Martin as a leader and champion for students.”
