Resolution Will Assist With PE Offerings; Other Areas Will Be Impacted
At its regularly scheduled meeting on June 6, the Person County School Board continued its discussion of the Reduction in Force (RIF) plan that was approved at a special called meeting held May 23. The RIF plan included eliminating twenty-two (22) certified positions and nine (9) classified positions. The cuts are due to reduced state and grant funding and resulting reorganization. Without making the reductions, the system’s financial obligations would exceed its funding.
With much consideration, the board is modifying the RIF plan to eliminate three (3) physical education positions instead of five (5) in order to have one PE teacher in all K-5 schools. This decision maintains current PE delivery in five of the seven elementary schools. In order to keep these positions, a counselor position and an instructional coach position will be cut. This decision was made in order to limit the direct impact to classrooms.
The board understands that eliminating positions is not popular with its stakeholders. However, the board and its staff feel the positions that are maintained in the district will provide sound instruction and services to students based on the allotments provided by federal, state, and local fund sources. The goal of the board is, and will continue to be, to provide a quality education to all of its stakeholders. The board has charged all staff with ensuring that the district meets and exceeds the standards established by the state board of education and local board policy. While a Reduction in Force is not welcomed at any time, the board of education values the resources entrusted to its care and wants to ensure such funds are designated to promote student growth and student preparation for college or career.
