Information for Parents of Rising Kindergartners 2020-2021 School Year
Welcome to Person County Schools! The information below should help you with the process of registering for kindergarten. Each school handles its own registration and hosts its own orientation. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s school. We look forward to meeting you and your child!
Which school will my child attend?
The best way to determine which school your child will attend is to call the Person County Transportation Department at 336-599- 5672.
Is my child eligible to attend kindergarten in 2020-2021?
Your child must be five years old on or before August 31, 2020 in order to enter kindergarten.
What if my child’s birth date falls after the cut-off date but I believe he/she is ready for kindergarten?
You may apply for early admission to kindergarten. The Early Admission to Kindergarten information is posted on the PCS website at http://bit.ly/2CVP8iX .
When is kindergarten orientation for my child’s school?
Each school hosts its own orientation. You will receive an invitation in the mail once you have completed the online registration. Dates will also be posted on the PCS website and each school’s website.
What should I take to the orientation?
You will need the following documents:
- Three Proofs of Residency – Examples: rental agreement, electric bill, driver’s license
- Proof of Child’s Birth Date – Certified birth certificate
- NC Kindergarten Health Assessment Form – North Carolina law requires students to have a physical health assessment prior to enrolling in school. It must be completed one calendar year prior to the first day of school and must include vision and hearing results. The NC Kindergarten Health Assessment Form is available on the PCS website, at each school site, or at the PCS Office Building, 304 S Morgan St.
- Immunization (Shot Records) – You may obtain this record from your family doctor or Health Department. Under existing laws, all children entering school are required to have the immunizations listed below:
- Polio vaccine
- Varicella vaccine
- 5 DPT
- 4 HIB
- 2 MMR
- 3 Hepatitis B
North Carolina State Law requires that a student have a complete record of immunizations (shot record) and kindergarten physical assessment within 30 calendar days of enrolling in school. Noncompliance may result in students not being permitted to attend school until this information is provided.
What can I expect at kindergarten orientation? Should I take my child?
Each school’s kindergarten orientation is different. However, you can expect to meet the principal and kindergarten teachers. You will also have the opportunity to tour the building.
Yes, please take your child to the orientation. Typically, there is a parent meeting hosted by the principal while the child participates in a short screening to determine how the school can best meet your child’s needs. Plan to be at the school for about one hour.
What should I do if I have questions about kindergarten registration or kindergarten orientation?
Contact your child’s school or you may contact Amy Seate, Chief Academic Officer at 336-599-2191, ext. 22122.
