Superintendent's Message for Plans to Return to School 2020-2021
Hello Person County School families. I am Rodney Peterson, Superintendent of Person County Schools. As you are aware, the Governor has not made a final decision on which plan schools will return on in August. Like you, we are anxious to make final preparations for the school year as we anticipate your children returning to our school buildings. From our survey last month, we realize that families have varying degrees of comfort around a return to school. We have made note of these concerns and would like to take some time to explain the plan that Person County Schools will follow if we are to return at 50% capacity and, also, an option for parents who do not feel comfortable sending their students back to school at this time.
50% capacity return, or Plan B, will be a Blended/Hybrid Learning model in Person County Schools. Through state guidance, schools under this plan must reduce the number of people at school campuses to at least 50% of their capacity. This means that some students will be learning from home while some will be on a school campus on a rotating basis. All campuses would operate under enhanced health and social distancing protocols.
An example of an anticipated week under Plan B would have our students divided into 2 groups.
Group 1 would attend school on campus Monday and Tuesday and be in remote learning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Group 2 students would be in remote learning on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and attend school on campus on Thursday and Friday.
To ensure proper cleaning, all campuses will be following guidance from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Wearing masks will be required for students (Grades K -12) on all school buses. In addition, students in Grades 6-12 will be required to have masks on while on school campuses (unless medical restrictions prevent one from being able to do so). All visitors and staff will be required to wear masks at all times. On Wednesday, all school campuses will be closed for deep cleaning to prepare for the next Cohort of students attending Thursday and Friday. Likewise, campuses will be following cleaning procedures during the day and after school while students are in attendance.
With the safety and well-being of all of our students, staff, and community members being of the utmost importance, we are also providing the option of a Person County Schools Virtual Academy.
Today, we will be sending our parents a survey so that we are aware of "how" you plan for your child(ren) to return on August 17th. While we know that the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are subject to change, we are asking that you make a decision for your child for at least the first semester of school no later than Friday, July 17th for us to effectively plan for the return of your child(ren).
Our staff, teachers, and administrators are working hard and are excited to have our students back on campus in August. Despite the challenges we face as a result of COVID-19, we look forward to working with you to create a wonderful school year for our students. Thank you for listening and for your support of Person County Schools.
